After the killing of Sean Bell, and the acquittal of the police involved in shooting him more that 50 times, Al Sharpton and many mixed peopled from around the city stood in protest. He along with hundreds of others, blocked bridges, tunnels and intersections to try to promote a peaceful protest. He was arrested.
Sharpton as well as many of his co-defendants, insisted upon a fair trial, although they would have likely been thrown out, like many other protesters. He took the stand during the brief trial and stated: "We wanted to stop violence, not cause violence."
The judge found him guilty and sentenced him to time served. Sharpton had already served 5 hours in jail following his arrest.
