Well, well, well, Beyonce is a song stealer; or at least is taking credit for a song that she didn't pen herself. Which, if you pay attention to her hit songs that she always claims to write, wouldn't be that big of a surprise. I mean without Ne-Yo's "Irreplaceable", which was originally intended for Britney Spears, her last album wouldn't have gone quite as far. Apparently, Ms. Knowles and her father Matthew bought "If I Were A Boy", without the original writers' (21 year old, singer/songwriter, BC Jean) consent and threw her name on the writing credits.
The issue has become of such high interest that even Fox News writer Roger Friedman published an article today appropriately titled, "Beyonceâs âStolenâ New Hit Record" (below). B, who claims to be so real claims that no one collaborated with her on her upcoming, "I Am", album.
"BC Jean is a hot, up-and-coming, 21-year-old female singer songwriter from San Diego. Those whoâve met her says sheâs smart and âgorgeous.â But BC (her initials, legend has it, are for âbeautiful childâ) got a cold dose of reality this summer when it comes to the record business. According to sources, she and her manager/mother have been strong-armed by Beyonceâs people and others who saw gold in âIf I Were a Boyâ and didnât care how they got it.
You can hear BC Jeanâs version of her own song, written with German pop-factory producer Toby Gad, at www.bcjean.net. Itâs certainly as good as Beyonceâs if not better. Itâs no wonder that this young woman is now the center of so much attention.
Altogether, I am told, BC Jean wrote and recorded about a dozen songs with Gad for an album the producer was planning to make of his own. When the deal fell apart, Gad â whose 300 plus credits are all co-written, never solo â took the songs and started marketing them to big name, established artists. Gadâs past âcollaboratorsâ include Fergie, on âBig Girls Donât Cry.â
When I wrote about Beyonceâs version of âIf I Were a Boyâ last week, calls came pouring in from people who knew the real history of this story. BC Jeanâs mother/manager, Lori Carlson, told me she couldnât comment on the situation. But plenty of people knew the saga of Beyonceâs legendary manager/father Mathew Knowlesâ aggressive pursuit of the publishing rights to the potential hit record. His goal was to get the rights to the song and to put Beyonceâs name on the writing credits."
